Why the label is worth reading

Most people pick a deodorant by scent, price, or habit — not by ingredient list. That’s reasonable, because reading a cosmetic ingredient list is a small skill on its own. INCI names are Latinised, chemical, and often unrecognisable. The result is that a very ordinary shopper can spend a decade using the same stick without knowing what any of the twenty items in the tiny print actually do.

Reading it doesn’t require a chemistry degree. It requires knowing four categories — active, carrier, additive, packaging — and roughly what each one is for. That’s what this guide covers.

The four things every antiperspirant is doing

Every antiperspirant on the UK market is trying to achieve four separate jobs at once, and each job has its own ingredient class:

  1. Stopping sweat — done by an aluminium salt, usually aluminium chlorohydrate. This is the technical difference between an antiperspirant (blocks sweat) and a deodorant (masks or neutralises odour without blocking sweat).
  2. Getting the active onto skin — done by a carrier system: alcohol, silicones (cyclomethicone, cyclopentasiloxane), or in an aerosol, a propellant gas (butane, isobutane, propane).
  3. Making it feel and smell pleasant — done by fragrance (parfum), emollients, and skin-conditioning agents.
  4. Making it last on the shelf — done by preservatives (parabens, phenoxyethanol) and pH stabilisers.

A short ingredient list doesn’t mean a simpler formula — it usually means fewer additives around the core active. A long list doesn’t mean an unsafe one — most of what’s in there is doing quiet housekeeping work.

Aluminium chlorohydrate — the active ingredient

The single ingredient that makes an antiperspirant work is nearly always aluminium chlorohydrate (sometimes aluminium zirconium tetrachlorohydrex glycinate in “clinical strength” products). When it hits sweat inside the eccrine duct, it forms a temporary gel plug that physically stops perspiration reaching the skin surface — usually for 24 to 48 hours.

The safety debate around aluminium salts has been running for decades. The current UK / EU position (SCCS opinion 2020, updated 2023) is that aluminium in cosmetics is considered safe at typical use levels for the general population, with a maximum concentration cap on aluminium chlorohydrate of 6.25% in non-spray formulations and 10.60% in sprays. The historical concern — a possible link to breast cancer via absorption through freshly shaved underarm skin — has not been supported by large-population epidemiological studies. Cancer Research UK, the NHS, and the American Cancer Society all currently state there is no convincing evidence that aluminium in deodorant causes breast cancer.

That said, aluminium salts have two well-documented downsides that even the strongest safety consensus doesn’t remove: they cause the yellow staining on white cotton (the chemistry is aluminium reacting with sweat proteins under heat during washing), and they can irritate freshly shaved skin. Whether to use them is a personal choice — the science says safe, but many people prefer aluminium-free simply for the practical and skin-comfort reasons.

The carrier system — alcohol, silicones, propellants

Alcohol denat / SD alcohol. Delivers a fast-drying feel and helps solubilise other ingredients. Well tolerated by most people; can be drying on already-sensitive underarm skin. Not the same as the alcohol in a drink — denatured alcohol contains additives that make it undrinkable.

Cyclomethicone / cyclopentasiloxane / dimethicone. Silicone fluids that create the silky glide of a modern stick and help the active spread evenly. Considered safe on skin. Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) has environmental persistence concerns and is being phased out of some EU rinse-off products, but its use in leave-on deodorant remains permitted.

Butane / isobutane / propane. The propellants in aerosol antiperspirants. Their function is purely mechanical — they push the formula out of the can. Skin exposure is trivial; the environmental question is aerosol volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contributing to ground-level ozone, which is why the UK has been steadily tightening aerosol propellant regulations.

Fragrance — the single biggest source of skin reactions

“Parfum” or “fragrance” on a UK label is a legal umbrella term that can hide dozens of individual aroma chemicals. EU / UK regulation currently requires 26 known allergens to be named separately if present above a threshold (limonene, linalool, geraniol, citronellol and others). Everything else can be pooled under “parfum” as a trade secret.

Fragrance is the single most common cause of underarm contact dermatitis reported to UK dermatology clinics. That doesn’t make it unsafe for most people — it makes it the ingredient class most worth watching if your skin is reactive, if you’ve had trouble with a previous product, or if you have eczema or rosacea. If you’ve ever reacted to a deodorant with no obvious cause, fragrance is the first place to look. Choosing a fragrance-free formula is the cleanest way to eliminate the variable.

Parabens — what the research actually shows

Parabens (methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and a few others) are preservatives that stop bacterial and fungal growth in water-containing formulas. They’ve been used across cosmetics since the 1920s and are extremely effective at very low concentrations.

The controversy started with a 2004 study by Philippa Darbre at Reading University that identified parabens in samples of breast tumour tissue. It did not show parabens caused the tumours — only that they were present. Subsequent research established that some parabens (particularly propyl- and butylparaben) exhibit weak oestrogen-mimicking activity in laboratory conditions, though at concentrations far higher than typical topical exposure.

UK / EU regulation responded to the uncertainty. In 2014 the EU banned five specific parabens (isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, phenylparaben, benzylparaben, pentylparaben) and capped the two most-studied ones (propyl- and butylparaben) at 0.14% combined. Methylparaben and ethylparaben remain permitted at up to 0.4% each and are widely considered safe.

The current mainstream scientific position — including from Cancer Research UK — is that parabens at permitted cosmetic levels are not known to cause cancer, but the topic remains under active review. If you prefer to avoid them, look for “paraben-free” on the label, or check the ingredient list for anything ending in “-paraben”.

The stabilisers you don’t need to worry about

A typical antiperspirant will also list several ingredients that do quiet, uncontroversial work:

  • Stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate — fatty alcohols and emulsifiers that give a stick its solid structure. Safe.
  • PPG-14 butyl ether, PEG-8, PEG-100 stearate — polyethylene glycol derivatives used as skin-conditioning and texture agents. Safe at cosmetic use levels; occasionally flagged for manufacturing contamination concerns which are managed via purity standards.
  • Sodium hydroxide, citric acid — pH adjusters. Present in trace amounts.
  • Phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate — alternative preservatives often used in paraben-free formulas. Safe at typical concentrations.
  • Talc — rare in modern UK antiperspirants but still occasionally used. Cosmetic-grade talc is required to be asbestos-free.

How to read your own label in 30 seconds

Pick up whichever antiperspirant is currently in your bathroom. Turn it to the back. In order:

  1. Is there an aluminium ingredient? Look for “aluminium” anywhere. If yes, it’s an antiperspirant. If no, it’s a deodorant (odour control only, no sweat blocking).
  2. Is “parfum” listed? If yes and your skin is reactive, that’s a variable worth removing on your next purchase.
  3. Anything ending in “-paraben”? Legal in the UK, but easy to avoid if you prefer.
  4. How many ingredients total? Not a safety measure — but a rough proxy for how much stabilising and texture engineering has gone in around the active.

Common questions

Is aluminium in deodorant banned anywhere? No. It remains legal across the UK, EU, and US at capped concentrations. The precautionary voluntary movement away from aluminium is consumer-led, not regulation-led.

Are natural deodorants regulated less than antiperspirants? No. All cosmetics sold in the UK fall under the same Cosmetic Products Regulation, are subject to the same safety assessment, and go through the same notification system on the SCPN (Submit Cosmetic Product Notifications) portal. Natural doesn’t mean unregulated.

Does an antiperspirant work better than a deodorant? For stopping visible wetness, yes — that’s the definitional difference. For controlling odour, a well-formulated natural deodorant using zinc oxide and arrowroot performs comparably to an antiperspirant for most people, once the two-to-three-week adjustment window has passed.

What about “aluminium salt” vs “aluminium chlorohydrate” on the label? They mean the same thing in this context. Aluminium chlorohydrate is by far the most common aluminium salt in UK antiperspirants.
