The two products are legally different things
In the UK, deodorants and antiperspirants sit in two different regulatory categories, and that isn't a technicality — it changes what each product is allowed to do. A deodorant is classified as a cosmetic. Its job is to neutralise or mask odour. An antiperspirant is classified as a cosmetic with a functional active — the aluminium salt is what makes it work — and its job is to physically reduce sweat by blocking the sweat duct. The two products look almost identical on the shelf. What they're doing to your skin is not.
The practical consequence: a deodorant leaves your natural cooling system alone. An antiperspirant partially switches it off. Neither is inherently better; they're for two different problems. Choosing the wrong one is one of the most common reasons people say "nothing works for me".
What an antiperspirant is actually doing
An antiperspirant contains an aluminium salt — usually aluminium chlorohydrate, sometimes aluminium zirconium tetrachlorohydrex glycinate in "clinical strength" versions. When it meets sweat inside the eccrine duct, it forms a temporary gel plug that physically stops perspiration from reaching the skin surface. Typical performance window is 24 to 48 hours. What a deodorant is actually doing
A deodorant does not block sweat. It targets the underarm bacteria that convert sweat into odour molecules. Sweat itself is nearly odourless when it leaves the skin — the smell comes from Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus species metabolising the sweat's protein and lipid content into short-chain fatty acids and thioalcohols. Reduce those bacteria (or make the environment less friendly to them) and the odour disappears without touching the sweat.

What to expect when you switch from an antiperspirant to a deodorant

What's happening: the underarm microbiome — the community of skin bacteria — needs to rebalance after prolonged aluminium exposure. During the first fortnight, you may notice slightly more perceptible sweat (because it isn't being blocked any more) and, initially, a stronger odour before the deodorant fully takes over.

Common questions
Can I use a deodorant and an antiperspirant at the same time? Technically yes, but there's rarely a reason to. If odour control is the goal, the deodorant is enough on its own. If sweat control is the goal, an antiperspirant carries the load and adding a deodorant on top adds fragrance but not function.
Do natural deodorants stop sweat at all? No, and they're not meant to. A well-formulated one absorbs surface moisture (via arrowroot) so you don't feel damp, but the sweat glands themselves are working normally.
Is a deodorant good enough for the gym? For most people, yes. High-output training produces more sweat but not proportionally more odour — controlling the odour is what matters. The bacteria doing the odour work aren't overwhelmed by more sweat; they're just working with more raw material.
