Sustainable Shower Gel UK: The Brands Worth Buying

Sustainable shower gel in the UK, sorted by format: refill pouch, concentrate, bar or bulk. Shower gel and body wash brands compared honestly.

AAdam Webb·10 October 2026·8 min read·sustainability

The most sustainable shower gel is usually the one that ships the least water and the least plastic. In the UK that points to refill pouches (Bower Collective, Miniml), concentrates you dilute at home (Splosh), bulk refills (Faith in Nature) or solid bars (Ethique, KinKind). Shower gel and body wash are the same product under two names.

I'm Adam, and I run Lifelong. We don't sell shower gel yet, but a refillable body wash is coming, so I've spent a lot of time reading labels, pouches and brand claims. This guide sorts sustainable shower gel by format rather than by brand, because the format decides most of the impact. For a straight brand list, see our round-up of eco-friendly body wash brands in the UK.

Is shower gel the same as body wash?

In practice, yes. Both are liquid cleansers for the shower. "Shower gel" is the commoner word in the UK, while many brands prefer "body wash", so I use both below. I couldn't find any legal or technical line between them.

What makes a shower gel sustainable?

Liquid shower gel is the hard case. It is mostly water, so every bottle on the shelf has been filled, packed and driven around with a lot of water inside it. A 2023 Packaging Europe feature on waterless products says a liquid can contain up to 80% water, and that a concentrate or solid is far lighter to transport. The share varies by formula and I couldn't find a firm figure for shower gel specifically, so treat 80% as a ceiling, not an average.

That leaves four questions worth asking of any product:

  • How much water is being shipped? Concentrates, cubes and bars carry almost none.
  • What is the container, and is it reused? A rigid bottle, a soft pouch, aluminium or cardboard all behave differently.
  • What is in the formula? Palm oil sourcing, synthetic polymers and fragrance all matter.
  • What happens at the end? Reused, recycled, composted or binned.

No format wins on all four. I've also written about why refillable tends to beat recyclable, if you want the longer argument.

Refill, concentrate or bar: which is actually better?

It depends on what you already own and how you shower. Here are the options side by side.

Format How it works Plastic saved Trade-off Brands doing it
Refill pouch Pour a larger pouch into a dispenser you already own Swaps a rigid bottle for a lighter pouch The pouch is still plastic unless reused or recycled, and you still ship the water Miniml, Bower Collective, Wild (compostable refill in an aluminium case)
Returnable container Post the empty pouch back to be cleaned and refilled Replaces single-use packaging with one pouch used several times You have to remember to post it back Bower Collective, Miniml
Concentrate Add water to a small pouch of concentrate at home Far less packaging and water in transit You mix and shake it yourself Splosh
Dissolvable cube Rub a wet cube between your palms No bottle, no water One cube per wash, so you can't adjust the dose Beauty Kubes
Solid bar Lather directly from the bar No bottle, no water Different feel, and a bar left in a puddle wears faster Ethique, KinKind, Friendly Soap
Bulk (2.5L to 20L) Decant from a large container into a pump Far fewer bottles per litre Storage space, weight and a bigger upfront spend Faith in Nature

My honest read: if you already have a pump bottle you like, bulk or a pouch refill is the easiest swap. If you travel a lot or dislike clutter, bars and cubes win. Concentrates are the strongest on transport. Returnable packs are the strongest on reuse, but only if you do post them back.

Best sustainable shower gel brands in the UK

I checked each brand below on its own website or a UK retailer listing in October 2026. Prices change, so check the price per 100ml before you buy.

Refill pouches and returnable packs

Bower Collective sells shower gel in reusable pouches. Each pack comes with a pre-paid envelope; you post the empty pouch back and Bower scans, refills and reuses it. Bower says it aims for up to 10 reuses per pouch, which is the brand's own target. Its 1L pouch costs more per 100ml than the larger bulk options.

Miniml offers 1L and 5L refill pouches of body wash and bubble bath, and a retailer listing says empties can be returned free to be cleaned, reused and refilled. As with Bower, the benefit depends on you actually returning the pouch.

Wild uses a reusable aluminium case with a compostable refill that slots inside. Retailer listings say a refill lasts around four to six weeks, so you reorder more often than with bulk.

Concentrates and cubes

Splosh sends a pouch of concentrate that makes three 500ml bottles of shower gel. You fill the bottle to a marked line with water, add the concentrate and shake. The compromise is the mixing step each time.

Beauty Kubes take the water out completely. One cube is one wash: wet your hands, rub the cube into a paste and lather. The unisex shampoo and body wash box holds 36 cubes, is made in Cornwall and ships plastic free. It is a 2-in-1, so it suits people happy to use one product for hair and body.

Bulk refills

Faith in Nature makes its body wash in Manchester and sells it in 2.5L, 5L and 20L refills as well as 400ml bottles. The brand says its 20L container holds the equivalent of 50 of its 400ml bottles, and it is a B Corp. On its own site in October 2026 the price per 100ml fell from £1.75 for a 400ml bottle to £1.05 for the 20L. The catch: 20L is heavy and takes space, and the containers are still plastic. It also lists a fragrance-free 5L refill.

Solid bars

Ethique body wash bars (120g) are sold in the UK through retailers including Sephora UK and Boots. The brand says its packaging is plastic free and home-compostable cardboard. KinKind makes 50g body wash bars in the UK, stocked by Holland & Barrett, and says a bar lasts about 30 washes. Friendly Soap is a UK maker of handmade soap and cleansing bars. Its bars are true soap, so the feel differs from a shower gel and a small bar is worth trying first.

Ethical Consumer's soap and shower gel guide notes that bars are less likely to contain petrochemical ingredients and use less plastic packaging than liquid soap, and suggests checking the palm oil sourcing.

What "sustainable" does and does not mean on a label

"Sustainable" is not a protected word on a shower gel. The CMA's Green Claims Code, published in September 2021, says environmental claims must be truthful, clear, not omit important information and be backed by evidence. That is guidance on existing consumer law, not a label standard, so read what sits behind the word.

  • Palm oil. "RSPO certified" has several supply-chain models. Segregated keeps certified oil physically separate; mass balance is an accounting method where certified and uncertified oil can mix.
  • Synthetic polymers. England banned solid plastic microbeads in rinse-off products in 2018, but the ban covers solid particles, so it says little about every polymer in a formula.
  • Recyclable versus refillable. "Recyclable" describes what might happen to the bottle. Refillable describes what you do. Councils also disagree on pumps: Dundee asks you to remove the pump top, while Worcestershire says tops can stay on.
  • Certifications. Third-party schemes such as B Corp, COSMOS and the Vegan Society carry more weight than a brand's own "eco" badge. Faith in Nature and Ethique both state B Corp status; KinKind lists a COSMOS-certified soap base on one bar.

Best shower gel for sensitive skin

"Best shower gel for sensitive skin" is a common search, and sustainable and gentle are different things. NHS trust leaflets on eczema, including one from South West London's integrated care board, say fragranced, coloured and foaming wash products can dry and irritate skin, and suggest an emollient soap substitute instead.

That is guidance for eczema, not a rule for everyone, and if you have a skin condition your GP or pharmacist is the right person to ask. For everyone else, the sensible habits are a fragrance-free or short ingredient list, a patch test and warm rather than hot water. Our guide to natural body wash for sensitive skin goes further.

Where Lifelong fits in

Lifelong doesn't sell shower gel today. We make refillable deodorant, with refills at £8.99 and one refill lasting about eight weeks. Our REEFill line of hand soap, body wash and shampoo launches on Kickstarter in March 2027.

Lifelong REEFill refillable bottle range

The containers are 100% ocean-bound recycled plastic, and the refills are powders in plastic-free compostable pouches, so there is no water in the pouch to ship. You add it at home. If you'd like early-bird access at 40% off, you can sign up here.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any difference between shower gel and body wash?

In everyday use, no. Both are liquid cleansers for the shower, and "shower gel" is simply the commoner UK name. Choose on ingredients and packaging, not the name.

What is the most sustainable shower gel?

There is no single winner. Bars and cubes avoid shipping water and bottles, concentrates ship far less water, and reused pouches or bulk refills cut packaging. The most sustainable shower gel is the one you will keep using, with a short ingredient list and certifications you can verify.

Are refillable shower gels cheaper?

Often per 100ml, once you buy bigger sizes. In October 2026 Faith in Nature's price per 100ml fell from £1.75 (400ml) to £1.05 (20L), while Splosh says its £7.95 concentrate pouch fills three 500ml bottles.

Best shower gel for sensitive skin UK: what should I look for?

Fragrance-free, a short ingredient list and a patch test on a small area first. NHS trust eczema leaflets advise an emollient soap substitute over fragranced, foaming washes.

Can you recycle shower gel bottles?

Usually, but rules vary by council, including whether to remove the pump. Empty and rinse the bottle, then check your council's A to Z recycling guide. Refilling avoids the question altogether.

Are shower gel bars better for the environment than liquid?

Often, because they ship no water and typically skip the plastic bottle. Ethical Consumer says bars use less plastic packaging than liquid soap. Palm oil sourcing still matters.

What does eco friendly shower gel actually mean?

There is no legal definition. The CMA's Green Claims Code expects any environmental claim to be accurate and backed by evidence, so look for specifics such as refill sizes, certifications and disposal instructions.

Ready to make the switch?

Small choices, real impact. Refillable deodorant, plant-based refills, and a lifetime guarantee.
