What SLS and SLES actually are
Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) is a surfactant — a molecule that reduces surface tension between water and oil, which is exactly what lets a body wash lift sebum, sweat and grime off skin. It's synthesised from either coconut/palm oil or petroleum feedstock, and it's been the workhorse detergent in personal care since the 1940s. Sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) is its milder cousin: SLS run through a process called ethoxylation that softens the molecule and makes it slightly gentler on skin. Both create the thick, satisfying foam most people associate with "cleanliness", both are cheap to produce, and both are legal at typical cosmetic use levels across the UK, EU, and US.
Between them, SLS and SLES appear in an estimated 70% of UK body washes, most shampoos, most hand soaps, most toothpastes, and a large share of household cleaners. They're the reason the industry can offer £2 shower gel that produces a huge cloud of foam. From a formulation-cost perspective, they're brilliant. From a skin-comfort perspective, they're the single most controversial ingredient class in personal care.
Why body wash uses them
Three reasons, in order:
- Foam. Consumer testing shows people equate lots of foam with cleaning power. It's an inaccurate association — a low-foam plant-based surfactant can clean as well as a high-foam sulphate — but the expectation is deeply embedded, and reformulating around it is a marketing risk most brands won't take.
- Cost. SLS and SLES cost a fraction of what plant-derived alternatives (coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, lauryl glucoside, sodium cocoyl isethionate) cost per kilogram. In a product retailing at £2–£4, ingredient cost is closely watched.
- Formulation stability. Sulphate surfactants play well with fragrance, thickeners, preservatives, and colourants. Plant-based alternatives can be fussier to formulate around, which raises development cost.

None of these are safety reasons. They're commercial reasons. That's worth knowing when you read the label.
Why they irritate
SLS is a well-documented mild skin irritant at concentrations above about 1%. Body wash typically contains SLS or SLES at 5–15%. On brief exposure (a normal shower) most people tolerate it without visible reaction. On extended contact, on already-compromised skin barriers (eczema, dermatitis, freshly shaved skin), or with repeated daily exposure, the picture changes. The mechanism is straightforward: sulphates strip the outer layer of the skin's lipid barrier — the mixture of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids that holds water in and irritants out. Once the barrier is thinned, the tight, itchy, sometimes tingling feeling in the twenty minutes after a shower is what compromised skin actually feels like.
The UK British Association of Dermatologists lists SLS as one of the most common patch-test positive results in contact dermatitis clinics. That doesn't mean it's dangerous. SLES and the 1,4-dioxane question
SLES is milder on skin than SLS because of the ethoxylation process, but that same process can leave trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane in the finished ingredient. 1,4-dioxane is classified by the US EPA as a probable human carcinogen and the SCCS in the EU has assessed it at cosmetic-use trace levels as "of low concern". UK regulation requires cosmetic-grade SLES to have 1,4-dioxane vacuum-stripped to under 10 ppm, and most reputable suppliers hit well below that. It isn't a crisis. It is a legitimate reason some formulators choose to skip SLES entirely and go plant-based upstream.

Sulphate surfactants biodegrade under standard OECD test conditions, which is why UK regulation permits them. That said, the palm/coconut supply chain feeding SLS and SLES globally is one of the more environmentally contested cosmetic feedstocks — palm cultivation in particular has driven deforestation in south-east Asia at scale. The RSPO-certified sustainable palm supply is now the default for most reputable UK cosmetics, but the wider supply chain remains under scrutiny. Plant-based alternatives derived from coconut and sugar tend to have cleaner, more traceable sourcing.
What a plant-based body wash uses instead
If you turn over a bottle marketed as "sulphate-free" in a UK aisle, the surfactants doing SLS's job will typically be one or more of the following:
- Coco-glucoside — derived from coconut and glucose (from corn or sugar beet). Very mild, biodegradable, low foam but effective cleaning.
- Decyl glucoside — the other main coco-derived glucoside surfactant. Ideal for sensitive skin, common in baby washes.
- Lauryl glucoside — another plant-derived surfactant, slightly stronger foaming than decyl.
- Sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI) — a coconut-derived surfactant that produces rich, cream-like foam without the barrier-stripping effect of sulphates.
- Sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate (SLMI) — a newer coconut-derived option with excellent skin tolerance and better foam than glucosides alone.
These aren't marketing ingredients — they're proven surfactants in daily use across hundreds of certified natural body washes. The chemistry works. The trade-off is cost per bottle, not performance on skin.

How to check any body wash label in 30 seconds
Turn the bottle over. In the ingredient list (INCI order — highest concentration first, so anything in the top four is the main event):
- Is there "sodium lauryl sulphate" or "sodium laureth sulphate" in the top four ingredients? If yes, that's the surfactant doing the work. If your skin has ever felt tight after a shower, this is the first thing to change.
- Is there anything ending in "-glucoside" or "cocoyl-" in the top four? Those are the plant-based alternatives. Their presence usually indicates a sulphate-free or low-sulphate formulation.
- Is "parfum" or "fragrance" present? On a compromised skin barrier, fragrance is the second most common contact dermatitis trigger. Fragrance-free is the safe choice if you're already reactive.
- Any parabens? Look for anything ending in "-paraben". Legal in the UK at capped concentrations, easy to avoid if you'd prefer.

Common questions
Is SLS actually banned anywhere? No. It remains legal across the UK, EU, US, Canada and Australia at capped cosmetic use levels. The precautionary movement away from it is consumer-led, not regulation-led.
What's the difference between SLS and SLSA (sodium lauryl sulphoacetate)? SLSA is a milder, larger-molecule sulphate variant that penetrates the skin less. Sometimes marketed as a compromise between traditional sulphates and glucosides. Better than SLS for sensitive skin; still not the same as fully plant-based.
Is sulphate-free body wash worth the higher price? If your skin has ever felt tight, itchy or reactive after a shower, yes. If you've never noticed anything wrong, the physiological argument is weaker — but the environmental and supply-chain arguments still apply.
Do sulphate-free body washes actually clean as well? Yes, in modern formulations. The foam is different (softer, less voluminous) but the cleaning performance is well established across dermatology-approved products.
Will the Lifelong body wash work for very sensitive or eczema-prone skin?
